* Choosing the Right Vehicle *

The point of this section is not to encourage you to go out and buy a new vehicle, but rather to help you in selecting a vehicle when the proper time comes to purchase a new one. Like your clothing and footwear, your vehicle should be functional and reliable. Some features to consider include:

 Ground Clearance: Ground clearance allows you to cross over curbs, parking bumpers and other (relatively minor) obstacles. Try any of these with a vehicle that sits low to the ground and you may rip a hole in your oil pan or otherwise disable your vehicle.

 Four-Wheel Drive (4WD): Having 4WD is useful, regardless of your location. Whether it is used for driving along a grassy median or ditch to avoid a gridlocked road, crossing a flooded street or abandoning the road altogether, you will be glad you have it. It does reduce you fuel mileage, so be mindful of that. It should also be engaged occasionally to ensure it is still functional.

 Wench: Though this is more of an accessory than a feature, I felt the need to mention this immediately after the recommendation for 4WD. Though 4WD is very useful, it can often get you into trouble that you cannot get out of. Having a winch ensures that, even if you get stuck, you still have options – as long as you have something to connect your winch to (tree, power pole, etc.).

 Size: A vehicle’s size can provide several benefits. If you are forced to navigate through a crowd, a large SUV is much more effective than a compact car. No one wants to get hit by any vehicle, but the larger the vehicle, the more apt people are to move out of the way. Also, if you are forced to push through a road block set up by people that mean to do you harm, the force (an object’s energy is affected by mass and velocity) of the larger vehicle has a higher likelihood of actually moving them (more on this later). Conversely, size affects fuel mileage and maneuverability. Go big, but not too big.

 Interior Space/Trunk Space/Bed Space: Of course vehicles with more available space will be able to store more items.

 EMP Proof: Some studies indicate that just because a vehicle has electronics does not mean it will definitely fail during an EMP event. To be certain your vehicle will withstand an EMP, you should focus on a vehicle manufactured prior to approximately 1975. These vehicles will be high-mileage, have low fuel efficiency and require a comprehensive knowledge of repairs to keep them functioning.

With these features in mind, I would recommend vehicles in the following order: trucks, SUVs, vans, crossovers and finally cars. Motorcycles indeed have benefits (increased mobility), but it comes at a huge cost (minimal storage space). In a riot or civil unrest situation, you could also be easily snatched from your bike. Be mindful of these tradeoffs before choosing a motorcycle.
